Carol Shelton Visits the Dallas Secret Wine Society
Carol Shelton and Mitch Mckenzie of Carol Shelton Winery took time off
from their busy ZAP Tour, which recently stopped in Houston, to share some
of their Zinfandel wines and the stories that went into making them.  The
three hours that transpired turned out to be one of the most educational and
interesting events we have ever had.  Both Carol and Mitch were so
gracious with their stories about their wine adventures and all of the high
profile wine industry people they had come to know on their journey.

Carol is the most awarded winemaker in California, which is quite a feat, and
she had the wines to back it up.  We tasted three Zinfandel wines and one
late-harvest Zin that was unfortified.  All four were delicious and a huge hit
with our guests.

The first Zin we tried was Carol Shelton's Monga Zin made from mostly
Zinfandel grapes grown in the Cucamonga Valley and the grapes were
crushed in the Southernmost Californian Wine Region of Temecula.

The next Zin was made entirely with natural yeast that fermented the wine to
perfection.  No outside yeasts were added and the grapes were harvested
from an organic vineyard named "Cox Vineyard" north of Ukiah.  The name
of this Zin was "Wild Thing" and it lived up to it's namesake with reckless
abandon.  This may have been the crowd favorite of the evening.

Our third Zin of the evening had a little something that we could all use in
our life.  It was titled, "Karma Zin" and the vibes that it gave off were quite
good indeed!  This Zin was born from 100 year old vines in the Russian
River Valley in Sonoma, California and included a hodge podge of other
grapes to round off the blend.  Just as the other two before it, once again we
were all impressed!

Finally, as a special treat, Carol broke out a half bottle of their delicious
desert style "Late-Harvest Zin" called "The Rocky Reserve".  This wine
derived its name from the Rockpile Ridge Vineyard in the Rockpile/Dry
Creek Valley, an area of California that has long been revered for its lush
Zinfandel wines.  I'd say Carol and Mitch scored big with this Zin as well!

I can't thank Carol & Mitch enough for coming and sharing their wines and
their wonderful and interesting stories.  This was an incredible experience
and one none of us will soon forget.  Right now, you cannot buy Carol
Shelton Wines in Texas, but I'm sure that will be changing soon!  If you get
the chance, I highly recommend trying any of her wines and by all means,
stop by their website to find out more details at
