The Dallas Secret Wine Society was lucky enough to have Donetta
Wallace, the Texas Sales Manager for Merryvale Vineyards in Napa
Valley, California stop by for a visit with our staff and give us a private
tasting of their Cabernet Sauvignon Portfolio. This included the Starmont,
the Reserve, the Profile, The Vineyard X and the Clone 6. Let me tell you,
from the cheapest to the most expensive, they were all stunning. In fact, if
you consider that the Starmont is what they refer to as their "Entry Level"
wine, or as Donetta refers to it, "The Pony that pulls the cart", you have to
be blown away with high level of quality it possesses. The Starmont at
around $27.00 a bottle has the capability of lasting up to a decade. That's
incredible for a twenty dollar bottle of wine.
Donetta shared with us her vast knowledge of the wine industry as well as
fun and interesting facts about the Merryvale Winery and their owners, the
Schlatter Family. The winery was the first one built in Napa after the
repeal of Prohibition. It was also very interesting hearing first hand about
how they contract their Beckstoffer grapes from the famous vinegrower, to
produce wines of extraordinary quality. And how they came up with the
names Vineyard X and Clone 6 were equally amusing, but I have been
sworn to secrecy about that interesting tidbit of information.
Honestly, all of the wines were fantastic with great richness an enormous
depth. I loved them all and so did everyone else. If I had to pick a
favorite, I would say that the Vineyard X stole the show and I think most of
the others agreed.
