Rodney Strong Tasting & Dinner at Zorba's 2008
What a great event!  Of course Rodney Strong really needs no
introduction, most people are already familiar with their Sonoma
Valley winery and wines, but it was good to hear a little about
them.  Just as a side note, Leslie and I visited Rodney Strong
this past July and the winery is quite swanky!  It is an interesting
winery to visit.

Shawn along with Republic Beverages rep., Jason Strawn,
powered through a short line up of some excellent value wines
and one ‘showstopper’, the winery’s big gun, Symmetry.  First
we started with the Sauvignon Blanc which was a perfect way to
wake up the palate.  Its crisp acidity makes it refreshing and an
ideal wine for the dog days of summer.  Despite it being from
California, I found that it was similar in profile to the New
Zealand style Sauvignon Blanc wines.  Maybe just a little more
subdued.

The next wine was a lightly oaked Chardonnay and it too was
quite refreshing.  There was just enough oak in the wine to let
you know it was there, but it certainly didn’t dominate the wine
they way it does in so many California Chardonnays out there.
In fact, it had a bit of a smoky taste that would be excellent with
smoked BBQ and bacon.

From here we switched over to red wines and what better way to
start off that round than with a Pinot Noir.  Very food friendly
with a velvety body and texture.  It is tough to find a good Pinot
under $20.00 so this was a welcomed treat.  The next red wine
poured was the Merlot and it may have quietly stolen the show.
Unlike the Cab that was poured next, it was drinking really well
right now and seemed to be an ideal wine for the Greek Cuisine
at Zorba’s.  Very smooth and soft with luscious plum fruit.  The
cab that followed the merlot was indeed good, but believe it or
not, it needed a little time to breathe before it opened up.  Once
it did though it was very complex and it was hard to believe that
it too was under $20.00.

And finally, as a treat or maybe as a cruel joke for those of us on
a budget, Shawn and Jason poured us the brand new Symmetry.
Honestly, I could have just smelled that wine in my glass all
night!  Yummy!  Big, but at the same time not overwhelming,
with tannins.  You could either enjoy this wine now or lay it down
for several years.  Your call!

Once again the food was fantastic and the service excellent!
Zorba’s never disappoints us and they go out of their way to
make us feel at home.  If you didn’t know it already, Zorba’s is a
great and authentic Greek restaurant that happens to also be
BYOB.  So if you have some wines in your cellar that you are
dying to break out with a great meal, this is the place to go!

I would like to thank Shawn and Jason for the excellent wines
and their hard work.  I would also like to thank the wonderful
staff at Zorba’s for their kind hospitality.  And of course, I want
to say thank you to everyone that came out to our event for
making it such a fun and fabulous time!
