Sideways California Pinot Noir Event Recap
|
Well there were a lot of great California Pinot Noir wines to be had and
someone brought a Cabernet, (Go Figure!) at Sheree’s Sideways “the
Movie” California Pinot Noir Event, but despite the movie being
played, I don’t believe there was a whole lot of movie watching going
on. Sheree served up a brisket and some award winning baked beans
for us to nibble on while we were supposedly watching the movie. In
the spirit of the movie, we sampled many great Pinot Noir wines from
all over California and there was not a single dud among them. I think
my personal favorite was the Acacia 2003 Carneros Pinot Noir.
Here are some interesting observations about the Sideways movie.
Miles, the main character, is thin-skinned, easily upset and fickle, very
fragile emotionally and quite finicky. These are all traits of the grape
he adores, Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir tastes lends itself toward the
sophisticated side although it would be somewhat debatable as to
whether or not Miles is a sophisticated guy. He certainly is more
sophisticated than his shallow, uncomplex, primate friend Jack, whose
personality is portrayed as that of a Merlot wine.
Miles makes a point of telling us in the movie that he thinks Merlot is
superficial and not worthy of his taste buds and another grape that he
absolutely slams in the movie is Cabernet Franc. I believe he says that
Cabernet Franc is nothing better than a blending grape and a waste of
good wine. Throughout the movie he makes reference to a 1961 Bottle
of Cheval Blanc, which is a Bordeaux wine from Saint-Emilion, located
on the right bank of the river, and happens to be one of the few
Bordeaux wines that is primarily made up of Cabernet Franc and
Merlot. Whoever wrote this movie was either a huge wine lover or
they really did their homework.
Here are a few photos of the event:

Some people really tried to get into the movie!
