The Super Cali Extra Delicious Quite A Cabernicious Tasting
This Past Friday, May 13th, the stage was set and the gauntlet had been thrown down. We had eleven of Napa Valley's Big Gun Super California Cabernet Sauvignons and Meritages going head to head in a blind tasting at Jennifer and Ian Hastie's. The competition was fierce, but in the end we had three wines that stood out above the rest.
We had a contest to see who could successfully pick the three best wines of the evening before we started and although three people tied in their predictions, it was newcomer Megan Andrews that won our tiebreaker taking home a bottle of what would be our Second Place Wine in the tasting, the 2001 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon. We also had a contest to see who could successfully identify the Plumpjack wine in the tasting which was won by Jennifer Hastie. The last contest we had was to see which person could entertain the masses the best by saying "Super Cali Extra Delicious Quite A Cabernicious Tasting" five times over in the most creative way. This was close, but in the end it was Brad Miller, whose horrific opera performance that caused the neighborhood dogs to howl, that received the most votes. Truth be told, I think people voted for him just to get him to quit singing!
The big winner of our wine tasting showdown was the 2002 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon receiving twice as many votes from the crowd than the second place wine. The second place wine received almost twice as many votes as the third place wine and that second place wine was the 2001 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon. The third place wine was the 2002 Plumjack Cabernet Sauvignon which edged out the Grgich Hills by one vote and the Groth by two.
Here are all the wines we tasted and the scenes from the event:
