Ted Domitrovich's Mature Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Recap
Ted Domitrovich, who quite literally has more wine than you can shake
a stick at, opened up his home and of course, some of his expensive
mature Cabernet Sauvignon wines for us to try this past Saturday
evening.  He had eight different wines, seven from California and one
from Australia.  He also had a splendid assortment of fine wine glasses
to choose from.  The guest's were asked to provide a dish to eat along
with the wines.  We had salads, bruscetta, baked brie, pasta dishes and
one unbelievable set of lamb chops.

Ted had brown-bagged all of the wines to hide their identity from us.
He did this because he had prepared a little game for all of us to
participate in.  It consisted of five questions, like which wine came from
Australia, which wine had received the highest wine critic score, etc...
We had a list of the wines that were tasting to reference, but it was up
to us to make the educated or should I say, Lucky guess as to which
bottle of wine was which.  Once the results were in, we had a three-way
tie for first place.  The three people that won had only been able to
successfully answer two of the five questions correctly.  Jim Fox, Ronda
Ackerman and myself were the big winners and Ted gave us each a
bottle of a Marquis Philips 2003 Australian Shiraz.  THANK YOU
TED!!!

Here is the list of the wines that we tasted:

1996 St. Francis Cabernet Sauvignon
1994 Gallo Barrelli Creek Cabernet Sauvignon
1996 Rosemount Show Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (the Australian)
1994 Chalk Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
1994 Markham Cabernet Sauvignon
1995 Flora Springs Cabernet Sauvignon
1994 Cakebread Cabernet Sauvignon
1994 Stelzner Cabernet Sauvignon

The general consensus among the guests was that the Cakebread was
the best tasting.  It still had plenty of zesty fruit and a nice tannic zip to
it!  The big disappointment of the evening was a huge surprise.  It was
the Flora Springs and it had basically left planet earth a long time ago
and was enjoying the view from Heaven along with Elvis.

Later in the evening, after we had tasted these eight wines, Ted began
opening many other bottles of Cabs in his vast and endless collection.
They were all good but I must tell you, the one that blew us away was
the
1993 Raymond Estates Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.  Despite it
being the oldest wine of the evening, it was utterly amazing!  I could not
sing enough of its praises.  If you go back to our Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Report, you will see that the 1999 Raymond took top honors in
our Cabernet Tasting.

I would like to say once again a very special thank you to Ted for
hosting such a fantastic event!  Thank you Ted!
